One of the cornerstones of our youth program is our character development curriculum. We understand that as a school we are in a unique position to influence the kids in our children’s program. We looked at ways of how we can influence our kids in a positive way and separate ourselves from other kids jiu jitsu programs. Sure we can teach them all the jiu jitsu techniques in the world, and brag about all the medals our kids win(and they do win those too!). But medals don’t guarantee that the child is benefiting positively from jiu jitsu training. To ensure the kids are receiving strong character development we use a specialized curriculum that we implement on a weekly basis.
Every month we introduce a character developing word and review it every class with our kids during our mat chats. What are mat chats? They are opportunities for us to sit and talk to our kids about our word of the week, but also a way to get to know each other. It is a really great ice breaker for newer kids, and the kids’ personalities really get to shine. The kids are given examples of the word of the week to use or display these positive behaviors at home and school.
Parents are encouraged to participate and be part of the team when it comes to our character development curriculum. We communicate with the parents to see if the kids are displaying positive behaviors at home and school. This is what separates Lake County’s kids jiu jitsu program from the rest. We understand the role a positive environment can have on a child. Showing positive character development is a factor we consider come promotion time.
Learning a martial art isn’t all about promotions and ranks, it is learning values and lesson that will positively influence your child outside the mats.
See you one the mats.
