As an instructor there will come a time when you will be lost for words because of the actions of your students. This time came for me September 10th at Fuji BJJ championships held at Harper College.
We took 4 kids to the tournament came away two silvers and two golds. At this point any coach would look at the tournament as a success. But I’m not one of those coaches. The day was a success because of the actions of one of my students from our children’s program. Billy’s opponent was accidentally hurt during their match. Was unable to continue for the remainder of the two matches in a best of 3. Recognizing that his first place medal was won because of injury. Billy took it upon himself to give his first place medal to his opponent. He did this on his own, without seeking mine or his dad’s advice.
Billy’s actions embody everything our kids jiu jitsu programs stands for at Lake County. We believe in building better people first. We are not a martial arts school that measures themselves by how many medals our kids program wins. We measure ourselves by how many kids we empower. We give our kids confidence, when our kids have confidence, they make better decisions, when they make better decisions, they have better friends, better friends means a better environment, and they do not get involved in bad situations.
Our children’s martial arts program is about creating a great environment, and building great kids. We are so proud of you Billy!!
Til’ next time.
